It’s Thanksgiving, which means today people across the entire United States of America will be joining me in expressing their thankfulness.
Some things I’m thankful for today:
- I think it’s finally safe for me to say that I am not sick anymore! YES!!!
- I still have a job (missing so much work so soon after being hired was making my employer nervous — and me, too).
- I have a home to live in, reliable transportation, and some savings in the bank. By itself that’s more blessing than most people in this world can count.
- I have the Bible in my own language, in several translations, and access to scholarly opinions whenever I run into parts that are hard to understand. All that, and the freedom to worship as I choose.
- I have access to the medications I have been prescribed, without which I would certainly be miserable and possibly dead.
- I have a happy marriage to a wonderful woman, two healthy cats, and a family that I actually look forward to seeing during the holidays.
Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

On my way home this evening, the sky was painted in pastel pinks and blues overlaid with soft-edged clouds as if it were the wall of an enormous nursery. It was gorgeous, and calming.
I might not have noticed the sky if I hadn’t planned to write this post. I didn’t wake up feeling thankful. In fact, I spent much of the morning stewing about realities that I don’t like, growing more irritable and angry as the morning wore on. But on the road home I realized I would have to be thankful for something, or I would have nothing to write this evening. So, I stopped looking at everything that wasn’t going my way for a moment and tried to see blessings. And suddenly I beheld this beautiful sky that had been filling my windshield just beyond my notice.
God is good all the time. Most of the time I don’t notice. I’m sure thankful that my inattention doesn’t change His goodness!

OK, I know, it’s totally not Thursday. It’s Saturday afternoon. Better late than never, though.
I am not quite over this illness, whatever it is. But I was well enough this week to put in a full 40 hours at work, and I’m very thankful for that.

Unfortunately, I can’t be thankful for being well. I went to the doctor yesterday and he said I should stay home the rest of the week. I slept most of the day today. Your prayers for me, dear reader, are much appreciated — and for my dear wife, who has caught the cold from me and feels worse than I do.
Between naps I have been reading The Edge of Evolution: The Search for the Limits of Darwinism by Michael J. Behe, which is Behe’s sequel to his now decade-old book, Darwin’s Black Box. Behe could use your prayers, too, because those who are convinced that the wide diversity of life arose entirely by natural selection operating on random mutations will surely respond — and their responses have not always been gracious.
I am thankful for Behe’s bravery, intelligence and ability to communicate complex scientific concepts clearly without losing the complexity. It’s hard not to be swayed by the constant affirmations of Darwinism, so I’m especially thankful for this well-reasoned and well-supported rebuttal.
